(The following is an invocation I gave at our unit ceremony today for authorization and wearing of our combat patches.)
Let us pray.
Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, we approach You this morning with hearts full of gratitude for the two centuries of freedom our nation has been allowed to enjoy. We invoke your continued strength as our liberties are constantly challenged since the days of our Founding Fathers. We stand before you this day frail on our own, but invincible in You.
We are reminded this Day of Independence, that freedom is not free, nor does it come from human institutions, but from Natural and Divine Law written in our hearts, a right of every human being. We remember our fallen brothers and sisters who have not died in vain.
We pray, O Lord, for those whose hearts are burdened today with grief and for those who do not have the privilege of freedom - whether bound by the oppression of tyrants or the shackles of sin. We pray for our families and friends back home who await our return, give them the strength to wait in loving patience.
Protect us all here today, as we gather and receive the reminder of a combat patch that we, too, through our sacrifices are in direct support of our nation's freedoms.
Lastly, help us O Lord, to always trust in You, and know that it is righteousness that exalts a nation. Let freedom ring in our lives, our nation and our world. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
And I think we all know where real freedom comes from, our Lord Jesus Christ who is the "...the way, and the truth, and the life." (Jn 14:6) and "the truth will make you free" (Jn 8:32).
God bless America!
